    Early Life and Education

    Antoni-Jean Gros was born in Paris, France in 1771 and displayed an early talent for art.

    At the tender age of 14, he became a student of Jacques-Louis David, who had a profound influence on his artistic development. In 1787, Gros enrolled in the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

    Flight and European Travels

    As the French Revolution intensified, Gros fled to Italy in 1793.

    He spent time in Florence and Genoa, where he studied Renaissance masterpieces and befriended artists and intellectuals such as François-Xavier Fabre and Countess d'Albany. In 1794, he returned to Genoa and met Napoleon's wife, Josephine de Beauharnais.
