Early Life and Influences
Victor Jara was born into a poor peasant family in rural Chile sometime in 1932.
His mixed ancestry, with both indigenous and mestizo roots, shaped his upbringing. Despite his father's resistance to education, Jara's mother, a gifted musician, encouraged him to pursue his artistic passions. Her untimely death at his fifteenth birthday marked a turning point in his life.
Education and Theater
After briefly studying accounting and considering a career in the priesthood, Jara joined the army.
